Peloponnese - The Mani

The Mani is the central peninsula of the three which extend southwards from the Peloponnese.  The inhabitants have been renowned through the ages for their resilliance, and when the Ottomans took over the Peloponnese in the 15th century, they never subdued The Mani. This was a mistake, as the Greek war of independence started in the Mani at Areopoli in 1821.
