Nafplion is situated in the northeast  Peloponnese in the Argolic gulf. It has three castles (at least) built by the Byzantines, the Ottomans and the Venetians (the Palamidi castle was the last major construction of the Venetian Empire)

It was the capital of independent Greece from 1829 until 1834. The first Greek leader Kapodistrias was  assassinated here in 1831.
